You were There in Front of Me




It's been nearly two years since I've been having this idea of doing portrait shoots using a web-camera (utilizing video chat programs, take photographs of the person on the other side with a camera while interacting), but it seemed to me that something was lacking in that concept, and I wasn't sure if it was a good enough to execute. But now (perhaps because I've completed Strangers), it makes more sense to me. And I've got a new laptop with a web-camera too.

I want to meet more people. But again, I'm not good at meeting people. Therefore I feel the need for staging, a restriction, so that I can function more in relation to the person and establish "proper" relationship with him/her, something more stripped-down, therefore truer than that of actual face-off. I figured web-cam portraits would be ideal.

I would like to do something very sincere, with this peculiar camera that is often associated with things sleazy and pervert. Also, I would like it to be international, I want people from all over the world precisely because the Internet in its nature blurs the notions of distance and proximity, making everyone "neighbours", even though I don't know if it is a good thing or not.

So, I am looking for sitters. I'll be here in my bedroom with my camera, in front of my laptop, and you are gonna be there in your bedroom, or wherever you are at the arranged time, just find yourself a good spot (lighting, background, the Internet connectivity, etc). We'll meet each other online, interact with each other, and make pictures. I have .mac account, so I can use iChat (or Skype, etc) for this. I am not sure if other stuff works with my Macbook or not.
