『風と共に散る/Written on the Wind』を執筆中、突然何も書けなくなってしまいました。困ってしまい、何を求めるでもなく立ち寄ったコンビニでHOPEと言う名前のタバコを見つけたので、これだ、と思い買ってみました。家に帰って封を開けましたが、タバコは吸えない体質なので、火をつけるのをすぐにすっかりあきらめてしまいました。そこで、その晩マシューと話をしてみました。ついでにアイスクリームを一緒に食べました。彼は、マグカップを洗筆用に使用して何か描いていて、そのマグカップには、「CLARITY」と書かれていました。僕にはそれがとても神々しい言葉に思えたので、まっさらの原稿用紙にそれを描いてみました。すると、少しいい気分になれました。多分、虹のせいだと思うのですが。

While writing “Written for the Wind”, I got stuck and couldn’t write any longer. Frustrated, I went out for a walk, like a writers do, stopped by an convenience store and found a pack of cigarette called HOPE. This is it, I thought and bought it. But I cannot smoke, and gave up lighting it soon after, I didn’t even have a lighter. I spoke with Matthew that night, and ate ice cream. He was drawing something with watercolor, and he was using a mug to wash his brush. Printed on it was a word “CLARITY”, with a rainbow next to it. The word seemed revealing to me; I started to draw it on the empty paper. It made me feel better and refreshed. Maybe it was just the rainbow.
