I translated twelve Japanese pop songs, to which I listened when I was in my early teens and they were significant during my formative years. In fact, all of the songs are by a band called Spitz. This work plays with appropriation and translation, I believe certain things never translate to other languages. In this particular case my personal memory, nostalgia/sentimentality, and collective memory that is shared by the kids of our generation in Japan. The lyrics are witty and beautiful in a quirky, Japanese way. However, they become cheap love songs once translated. The act of my translating these songs into English, not my first language, adds another element to the work, making them highly personalized.
